NEW designs for the latest phase in a massive £250 million development at Brighton Marina are to go on public display.

Residents will be able to see the new proposals when they go on display at Malmaison Hotel at Brighton Marina on November 8 and 9.

The original plans for 853 flats and retail, commercial and community spaces, which included 11 buildings ranging from six to 40 storeys high, were granted planning permission in 2006.

The first phase of almost 200 flats and seven restaurants was completed in 2016.

Last year, the High Court dismissed a challenge by opponents who complained the latest stage obstructed navigation routes.

New project architects Squire and Partners are now drawing up draft designs.

They promise high quality, new private and affordable homes in a scheme which they say better connects with Brighton and Hove and enhances the marina as a whole”.

A spokesman said: “We want to open up attractive spaces to the public and residents, with access to the waterfront all the way around the site for people to enjoy views of the sea, the city and back into the marina waterfront.”

Professor John Watts was a leading architect in the original construction of Brighton marina more than 40 years ago and a member of Brighton Marina Action Group.

He said: “Over the past four years, we have been in the High Court to oppose the unsustainability of the development.

“We have been fighting the original plans for four or five years and we are considering objecting again on different grounds, but we have not seen these new development plans yet.”

Legal challenges have been in action for more than four years over various issues.

Last year’s legal challenge focused on the plan to build more than two hectares over a “spending beach”, which breaks up incoming waves and reduces their energy, and sea at the marina’s south west tip to create foundations for three towers, the highest of which was planned to be 40 storeys high.

A marine licence granted in February 2016 allowed for the installation of a series of supporting piles and booms close to the mouth of the harbour.

The scheme is being carried out by the Outer Harbour Development Company Partnership LLP, part of the Brighton Marina Group Ltd.

The public drop-in exhibition for local people to view early designs, meet the design team and share their views is open at 4-8pm on Thursday November 8 and 1-5pm on Friday November 9 at Malmaison Hotel.

The proposals will also be available to view, with the opportunity for online comment, from November 8-23 at www.outerharbourdevelopment.co.uk.
