A RENTERS union blocked bailiffs from evicting a man from his flat.

Members of the Acorn union gathered a group of about 20 people to block the entrance to the Brunswick property on Friday.

A demonstrator standing in the rain outside the house in Brunswick Place, Hove, said: “This is someone who came to us urgently.

“The gentleman upstairs has been in this building since ’97.”

The group say the man fell behind on his rent due to a problem with Universal Credit.

A spokesman said: “Countless people are facing eviction every day all over the country through no fault of their own.

“Falling into rent arrears because of late universal credit payments is one of the many ways that vulnerable people are becoming homeless.

“We will not stand by and see our friend, our neighbour or anyone from our local community experience this injustice.”

Acorn say they are a community-based union tackling injustice across the country.
