MANY of you eagle-eyed readers out there may have already spotted the great contrast in today’s newspaper.

On page 8 we have the sorry news that Brighton and Hove residents have the lowest amount of disposable income in the country.

Then when you get to the Timeout nostalgia section on page 20 you will see our trip down memory lane to some news from 15 years ago.

It looks back on an Argus report that stated six out of ten retired people say they are having the time of their lives, collectively spending £1.5 billion a month on travel, meals out and hobbies.

One suspects little has changed in many ways.

Retired people, who worked hard and saved, are now enjoying the fruits of their labour. They may have voted for Brexit, but they are taking every chance to enjoy their time in the sun and on cruises when they can.

And why not? That’s what we say. They earnt it. The problem with many people these days is that they expect everything to land on a plate for them. If you have been forced to watch The X Factor at the weekend did you notice how many of the singers had lost their voices?

That’s because none of them have probably ever sung before. They have not spent years working the clubs the length and breadth of the country like the stars of yesteryear.

There were times in the 1960s when The Rolling Stones played more than 300 concerts in one year. The kids of today only have to play one song on The X Factor and it wears them out.

Wok hard, knuckle down and earn your cash. Then don’t waste it.
