PATROLS will be stepped up after a spate of bicycle thefts at a university campus.

Students have reported cycles being taken from storage areas around the University of Sussex at Falmer.

One student, who did not wish to be named, said his bike was stolen last week, and fears thieves are operating without fear of getting caught.

“They cleaned out the bikes from an entire hall of residence, and my bike was taken in broad daylight,” he said.

Police say nine bikes have been reported stolen in a two week period in October, and officers want to work with the university to stop thieves.

Meanwhile the university said thieves are “taking advantage” of the fact that hundreds of staff, students and visitors cycle in each day.

In a statement the university said: “Sadly over the past month there have been several thefts at Falmer, and we appreciate this can be incredibly upsetting for those who have their bikes stolen.

“We are in contact with the police, and are stepping up patrols. We have also reiterated our security advice to staff and students to try to limit the risks of theft.”

British Transport Police will host free bike marking and registration at Falmer station on November 21.
