A CON man tricked a vulnerable pensioner out of hundreds of pounds by calling at her address.

The fraudster pretended to be from the water board, and said he needed to check the taps inside the property in Arundel Road in Peacehaven.

An 85-year-old woman allowed the unknown man into her home, and while she was distracted he stole £735 in cash, bank cards, and other paperwork.

It happened at 2.45pm on Tuesday, and police are appealing for any witnesses who might have seen a man acting suspiciously.

He is described as white, 5ft 6ins, wearing a jumper with a logo, and trousers.

The water board has not existed since 1973, and police say anyone calling at the door should be asked for identification.

Residents should keep doors on a latch, and not be afraid to turn someone away, no matter how persistent they are.

Anyone with information should report it to Sussex Police online or call 101 and quote serial 681 of 30/10.
