Friday the 12th of October saw students at Steyning Grammar school take part in their annual Pink Day to raise money for Breast Cancer Research. A sea of pink descended on the school, every man, women and child willing to donate £2 to the worthy cause. But the highlight of the event was the Pink Day dance.

Students from year 13 choreographed and performed the showcase event which, as with every year, proved a resounding hit with pupils and teachers alike. The quality may have lacked but the effort and the confidence certainly didn’t. Boasting a range of songs from Milkshake to Singing in the Rain, students danced and jumped around the stage in pink tutus, crop tops whilst covered in bright pink paint and glitter. Leaving the Drama hall many remarked that despite it looking like “Theresa May’s dance troupe” with the “horrific sight permanently etched” in people’s minds, it was 50p well spent.

Throughout the day the money rolled in and reached a grand total of £1027.67 something the school as a whole were “thrilled about,” none more so than the choreograph team, led by Aimee Johnstone, and the dancers themselves. One dancer, Sam Beard, 17, “loved it” and regardless of the “slight feeling of fear before the show” he “would do it again in a heartbeat because it goes to a good cause as well as being surprisingly good exercise.”

The success of the day was slightly tarnished by the lack of a cake sale leaving those partial to a charitable baking bonanza disappointed, nevertheless this minor gripe from a few greedy people would never be enough to claim this event as anything other than an overwhelmingly enjoyable and triumphant day that may help those battling breast cancer in the future, no matter the size of the donation.
