THREE fencers who travelled to Italy to compete in the World Veterans Championships have come home with a gold medal.

Brian Causton, 73, Matthew Chell, 59, and 51-year-old Ingrid Heskett, who are all members of Brighton and Hove Fencing Club, challenged fencers from 50 countries in the six-day event.

As a member of the GB Foil Team, Brian, from Rottingdean, won gold and also took top honours with a fifth in his age group in the individual foil and epee.

Ingrid Heskett, from Hove, was placed fith overall in the women’s epee, while Matthew, a retired local government policy analyst who lives in Brighton, took part in the 50 plus age group in the individual epee and was ranked 51st in his first international competition.

Brighton and Hove Fencing Club chairman Tim Chittleburgh said: “It’s a fabulous result for Brian and for the GB team. For Ingrid, being the fifth best female fencer in the world in your age group is quite something and it’s an excellent result for Matthew.” The club also won the county Sabre Championships last weekend, making the club Sussex Sabre Champions.
