A BROKEN down train in Worthing is causing rail delays and cancellations this morning.

Disruption through Hove and Angmering is expected to last until 9am.

Tickets will be valid on the following routes:

  • Brighton and Hove Buses between Brighton and Shoreham by Sea
  • Stagecoach Buses on route 700
  • South Western Railway services between Southampton / Portsmouth and London

Rail replacement buses are also being used.

Southern Rail said: "Earlier this morning a train developed a fault at Worthing, being unable to draw power from the third rail.

"This blocked the line towards Littlehampton and other West Coastway destinations.

"A rescue train was sourced to attach to the faulty unit, and push it out of the way. This has been done successfully, and services will resume their intended journeys.

"When a train fault occurs, the driver will contact train technicians and will be guided through a 10 minute repair process.

"If they are unable to fix the fault, the train will be terminated and taken out of passenger service and returned to the depot for full safety investigation and repairs.

"This is likely to have an immediate knock on effect, particularly in busy locations across the network, as well as on later services in the day."
