Flood warnings have been issued as torrential rain and thunderstorms have battered Sussex.

Emergency services have warned motorists to take care on the roads, as there is a great deal of standing water after heavy rainfall.

In Brighton and Hove the fire brigade is urging people to take care.

On Twitter the service posted: "Out and about in Brighton & Hove? There's lots of standing water around, drive carefully and don't be tempted to drive through the big puddles. They can be hiding submerged hazards."

The Government's own flood information service has issued a warning to residents living near the River Mole that water levels will rise through Horsham and Crawley.

The advice stated: "Heavy rainfall overnight last night has caused water levels in the River Mole to rise.

"Further heavy showers are forecast overnight tonight, which may cause water levels to rise further.

"Flooding of low lying land and roads close to the watercourse is possible tonight and through Sunday morning.

"No flooding of property is currently expected, however we are monitoring the situation and will issue flood warnings if required. Please take care in areas close to the river, and monitor your local weather conditions."

Adur and Worthing Police posted: "Multiple reports of road flooding coming in. Old Shoreham Road, Shoreham for one. Mind how you go and get the wellington boots out if you can.
