A BURGLAR stole more than £700 from an elderly woman while pretending to help her.

The man, aged in his 30s, called at the woman’s home in Arundel Road, Peacehaven, claiming to be from the water board at 2.45pm on October 30.

He distracted the 85-year-old before stealing £735, bank cards and paperwork.

Police have issued an e-fit picture of a man described as white, 5ft6in, of medium build, with curly, light-coloured hair cut short at the sides.

He wore a navy blue jumper with a logo on the left breast.

Police are reminding residents, especially the elderly and their families, to be aware of cold callers.

Six times in the last three weeks, two men claiming to be water board officials have also called at addresses in Worthing and Shoreham.

One is described to be about 40 to 50 years, of chubby build, wearing a fleece and combat-style trousers.

The second is aged 25 to 30 with fair hair.

All the victims of these recent burglaries are in their eighties and have lost cash and jewellery of great sentimental value, according to police.

The daughter of one elderly victim said: “My 85-year-old mother has survived cancer, strokes and heart attacks.

“She is stronger than these spineless creatures will ever be. They must be so proud they caused so much alarm and distress to her by taking advantage of her better nature and stealing the most treasured possessions she had.”

Detective Constable Sara Liau said: “Please be vigilant and always ask callers for proof of their identity. There is no longer any organisation called ‘the water board’ and the modern water companies will visit by appointment anyway.
