A DRIVER accidentally reversed his car into a supermarket, smashing its front window and injuring himself and his wife.

It is understood the driver was being directed into a parking space at the Waitrose store in Lewes by his wife at the time.

A Waitrose spokesman said she fell and hit her head while trying to move out of the way as her husband crashed into the front of the store.

Emergency services were called to the scene just after 11am and the driver and his wife were treated for minor injuries.

Jon Tooley arrived at Waitrose just after the crash and said: “The driver was clearly in a bit of shock.

“Waitrose had to shut and staff were just waiting around while the driver was being treated.

“It could have been a lot worse.

“Luckily no one was seriously injured.”

A police spokesman said: “Emergency services were called shortly after 11am on Monday to a car which had collided with the shop.

“An ambulance attended and the driver was treated for minor injuries.

A Waitrose spokesman said luckily no-one was seriously hurt.

He said: “We’d like to offer our thanks to South East Coast paramedics, who were very swift in their response.

“Although we did close for a brief period, we’re pleased to report that the store has now reopened.”
