A SIXTH form college has been rated “good” by government inspectors for the second time in a row.

Education watchdog Ofsted found that Varndean College in Surrenden Road is “inclusive” and “promotes the value of diversity”.

The inspectors praised governors, leaders and managers for developing a highly inclusive culture that allows staff and students to thrive.

Teachers were recognised for knowing their students well and commended for sharing their own experiences and expertise to motivate students to achieve.

The vast majority of students were reported to “enjoy their learning”, were “highly cooperative” and benefited from a broad and balanced curriculum.

The new report said most of the students make good progress and achieve well, and that “nearly all progress onto their first-choice university or to their chosen next step.”

The students also feel safe at the school, according to the report.

It read: “Students are aware of the support available to them and know who to speak to if they have any concerns.”

The college is mainly built on British values, and staff and students model these. Yet the inspectors did report “a minority of students lack a secure understanding of the risks associated with radicalisation and extremism”.

Inspectors said careers advice for students who do not want to go to university could be improved.

It read: “Senior managers have recognised weaknesses in careers advice for students not going to university and put actions in place to improve the situation.”

But it did say safeguarding measures at the school are effective.

Phil Harland, college principal said: “I am once again delighted with the Ofsted report which its inspectors have returned.

“Again, it has identified that Varndean College is a highly inclusive college with a culture that allows its students to develop and thrive as individuals, encouraging them to progress and achieve in whichever direction they choose.

“Progression is not just about developing academically, but also emotionally and socially, and at Varndean College students are supported in every way possible.

“Students and tutors pride themselves in working well together and I praise my staff for their dedication. I know that the students who come to Varndean are happy students and happy students make successful students.”

Janice Robinson, chairwoman of governors said: “Staff and students have yet again shown what a good college Varndean is. My congratulations and thanks go to everyone for their hard work.”
