AN ARMED forces charity is urging readers to attend the funeral of a war hero on Tuesday.

George Henry Liggins, 85, will be laid to rest at Woodvale Crematorium in Brighton.

But he has no next of kin and his neighbours have arranged the funeral with the help of SSAFA, the armed forces charity. George died last month in hospital.

In July 1951, George enlisted into the Royal Leicestershire Regiment where he completed National Service, before being medically discharged in 1966.

Following National Service, he decided to enlist in the Coldstream Guards, where he served mainly with the 2nd Battalion and saw service in British Guyana, where he was orderly to Sir Brian Bartlett, as well as Kenya and Zanzibar.

The funeral, taking place on Tuesday at 9.30am, is due to be attended by Mr Bartlett, now the president of the Coldstream Guards in Sussex.

Fellow members of the Association will also be there.

Flowers are welcome or donations in his memory cane be sent to SSAFA via Co-op Funeralcare, 133 London Road, Brighton.
