A WOMAN could not believe her eyes when she saw three young men scrambling up the back of a bus while she was driving.

Val Young, 60, was driving with her sister along Eastern Road in Kemp Town when she saw three boys climb up the back of a bus while it was waiting at a red light.

Ms Young, from Brighton, said: “This was probably the most most terrifying and dangerous stunt I have ever witnessed.

“I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

“Three youths, aged anything between 14 and 18, ran in to the road in front of my car and jumped onto the back of the bus.

“At first I thought the boys were going to do something to my car when they stepped in to the road.

“My sister was taking a picture while I was driving incredibly slowly behind the bus.

“I was so nervous one of the boys was going to fall off the bus and into the traffic.”

Ms Young said she was horrified to see the boys still clinging on when the lights turned green and the bus started to move up Arundel Road.

She said: “They made several attempts to get on the bus as they kept falling off.

“One of them was almost falling off when the bus started moving.

“It was terrifying as I was driving behind and I had to keep my distance as they could easily have fallen off and into the road in front of moving cars, especially mine.”

She said she was too busy focusing on the road to see which bus the boys were launching themselves on, but she believes it was either Brighton and Hove bus 1 or 1A heading up Whitehawk Road.

The boys had managed to climb very high up on the back of the bus according to Ms Young which made her think this was not the first time they had done it.

She said: “I have no idea what they were holding on to, and they managed to reach up to quite an impressive height.

“It looked to me as though this has been done before and it’s one of those silly pranks that these young guys get up to.

“It’s almost as if they saw the bus coming and thought among themselves, ‘I dare you to climb up the back of it’.

“I cannot believe anyone would do this.

“They were just so lucky they were not hurt.”

Ms Young said if there were passengers at the back of the bus they would have definitely heard the boys jumping up.

Martin Harris, Brighton and Hove Buses’ managing director said: “This is an incredibly dangerous thing to do and I’m imploring people not to try it under any circumstances.

“Don’t put your life at risk for the sake of a stupid dare.

“If you do see this happening, please report it immediately to the police on 999.

“The police will also ensure that our Police Liaison Officer and our control room know about any incident, if they don’t already know about it.”
