A RAIL company are coming under fire from football fans after they endured an uncomfortable journey.

Passengers struggled with cramped conditions and one traveller claimed that “at Hove nearly 100 people couldn’t get on” when a Southern Railway train from Worthing to Brighton had its number of carriages reduced.

Daniel De Conceicao Silva, who was travelling to see Brighton’s game with Chelsea, said: “Surely, someone at Southern Rail is responsible for planning this journey. They should know about the game and could have put on extra carriages.

“Perhaps, someone needs to send them the fixtures list so they can actually learn from this?”

Daniel boarded at Worthing, and said that the train’s driver announced over the tannoy that he would be raising concerns over the decision to run a reduced service.

Southern Railway have also put out a warning to customers travelling on the Brighton Mainline as a fault in the signalling system in the Forest Hill area is causing heavy disruption.

This comes after several signal failures yesterday which caused heavy delays to the company’s services between Brighton and London Victoria.

A spokesman from Southern Railway said: “The fault has been confirmed as a double track circuit failure. This means the signalling system is unable to automatically verify if the next section of track past the affected signal is clear.

“Services will be subject to short notice delay, alteration and cancellations due to having to run at a reduced speed throughout this area.”

The rail company warned passengers to expect disruption until 5pm.
