FOOTBALL fans have said goodbye to the father of a footballing family who died aged 89.

Walter “Wally” Alexander Alan Hinshelwood was the head of the Hinshelwood football family, as his sons and grandsons have played professional football.

His playing career spanned 1947 to 1962 but was forced to retire prematurely due to injury.

Wally was born on October 27, 1929, in Lambeth.

He first played for Fulham from 1947 to 1951 and a brief time for Chelsea in January 1951. He described it as his “dream move” and he earned £12 a week.

He played against the legendary Duncan Edwards - who lost his life three years later in the Munich air disaster.

After a four-month stint, he was transferred back to Fulham.

Wally’s career peaked in the 1950s.

He joined Reading in 1952 and became a first-team regular.

The right-winger played in the FA Cup third round game against Manchester United at Elm Park.

He was chosen to play for the Third Division South representative side in 1954. He made 135 league appearances and scored 31 goals.

Wally was transferred to Bristol City in 1956 and made 162 appearances and scored 16 goals. He was considered as one of the best wingers in the football league.

In 1959, the crowd watched a the man-of-the-match performance, where he set up a goal for Bert Tindall.

He finished his playing career in Millwall (1960-61) and Newport County (1961-62).

He also worked as a caretaker at a housing development called New Addington in Surrey.

His son Martin, 65, is currently coaching Lewes Football Club.

He played for Crystal Palace from 1972 to 1977 before becoming manager at the Albion.

Martin’s football career was also cut short by injury.

His brother, Paul, 62, played for Crystal Palace, Oxford, Millwall and Colchester United.

Wally’s grandson Danny, 43, also played for the Albion and is managing a non-league club in Selsey. His younger grandson, Adam, is managing Worthing.

He passed away on November 26.

His funeral will take place this Friday at St Peter’s Church, in St Peter’s Crescent, Selsey at 12.30pm.
