Emergency services closed off a seafront road after a car hit a pedestrian.
Police and paramedics were called to Devonshire Place in Eastbourne after the incident on Tuesday.
A man, 82, was injured in the collision with a green Rover shortly after 4.30pm.
Officers braving the rain were seen cordoning off the road between the Cavendish Hotel and the Cumberland Hotel, near the junction with Devonshire Place.
It is understood that the man was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with serious injuries. He remains in a stable condition.
