A stationary police car was wrecked after a car careered into it on a busy dual carriageway.

Police had responded to a collision on the A23 southbound at Warninglid near Burgess Hill at 7.20pm on Tuesday.

A patrol car had parked in the outside lane with blue lights to divert traffic, but was hit by a third vehicle.

The driver suffered serious leg injuries in the crash and had to be taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

There were long delays as the road was then closed by police to investigate. It only reopened at 5am this morning.
