FANS of a popular reality TV show were left in tears when the star proposed to his girlfriend on air.

Brighton musician Daniel Wakeford popped the question to long-term partner Lily on Tuesday’s episode of Channel 4’s The Undateables,

Daniel, 30, who has autism, captured the hearts of the nation when he and Lily, 23, met on the show just before Christmas last year.

The musician asked his girlfriend to marry him on Brighton Bandstand, her favourite place in the city.

And she said yes, to the delight of viewers.

Daniel serenaded Lily with a rendition of Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You before getting down on one knee to propose.

Fans of the show took to social media to express their delight, with many claiming it to be their top TV moment of the year.

One Twitter user posted: “Damn it Daniel and Lily, I appear to have salt, lemon, Vicks VapoRub and pins in my eyes. What a great start to Christmas TV.”

Another said: “I don’t need anything else for Christmas.

“This made it beautiful. Wish Daniel and Lily every happiness.”

Another Twitter user posted: “That’s the most romantic proposal I’ve ever seen.”

The proposal had been in the planning for a while, with Daniel spending the six months saving up to buy the “perfect” ring.

During the festive special, he said: “I’m feeling very excited. She will be ever so surprised.”

Daniel had enlisted the help of a choir for the evening and sent Lily a text message asking her to meet him at the Bandstand.

Following the song, Daniel said: “I love you, I always have and I always will. Lily, my darling one, will you marry me?”

“Yes,” Lily shouted in delight as he put the ring on her finger and the pair shared a hug.

Singer Daniel exclaimed “I did it” as cheers came from the choir in the background.

The pair had their first date in a coffee shop a little over a year earlier, as part of the show.
