A man brandishing a "machete" has been held on suspicion of attempted murder.
Armed police swooped in to Lawrence Avenue in Littlehampton after reports this morning.
A man suffered serious injuries and was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital.
The armed officers fired a baton round to bring down his alleged attacker.
They say a 54-year-old man was held on suspicion of attempted murder.
He also suffered injuries which were described as “serious” and was in the care of the ambulance service.
No police have appealed for information about the incident.
Detective Superintendent Carwyn Hughes said: “We’re still trying to establish the exact circumstances.”
Witnesses are asked to call 101 or contact Sussex Police via the force’s website, and quote Operation Mongoose.
