RESIDENTS from Lewes have given their opinion on a poster banning vegans from a pub.

A poster at The Dorset pub in Malling Street, Lewes, said “saboteurs (sabs) or vegans” would not be welcome in the property on Boxing Day.

Vegan Tiana Lizzi, 15, from Lewes, said: “I don’t know why they would do that, it is discrimination and not politically correct.

“I’m shocked about it as there are loads of vegans in Lewes so I don’t know why they would do that.”

We spoke to Tiana with permission from her family

Yesterday saw violent clashes in the town between hunters and protesters during a traditional Boxing Day hunt.

Gemma Burleton, 40, from Laughton said she was at the demonstrations yesterday.

She said: “I thought the poster was pathetic.

“When it comes to the hunt I’m split down the middle and I can’t side with the sabs as they were aggressive and scaring the horses.

“So I get it if they don’t want sabs causing aggression but why vegans?”

The manager of the pub has now been suspended pending further investigation, according to the owners.

Lewes resident Mick Keane said: “I think it was all a poor attempt at humour.

“It was a joke that backfired and it has riled up people.

“He (the manager) was playing with his job and he is learning a lesson quickly."

One man, who did not want to be named, said: “I find it quite funny really. If the manager had apologised, then I think the matter is closed.”
