CHRISTMAS has been and gone, as has a mountain of food.

An overload of cheese, chocolate and alcohol has a tendency to put an extra strain on our belt buckles.

So, here are the top ten places to eat, and drink, healthy in Brighton and Hove, according to TripAdvisor.

1. Burger Brothers, North Road, Brighton

Perhaps a burger restaurant isn’t an obvious choice for the title of Brighton’s best healthy restaurant, but Burger Brothers breaks this greasy reputation.

Gluten free and vegan options, as well as a grilled veg side, make this the perfect place to get your five-a-day.

One customer said: “If you haven’t been here then you need to. I’ve been here as a vegan and an omnivore and can vouch for both. Just wow.”

2. Wheat and Beans, St James’s Street, Brighton

Mediterranean and Latin American influences mean Wheat and Beans’ dishes are packed with colour, flavour and goodness.

It also has a selection of coffees if you’re looking for a pre-workout energy boost.

A reviewer said: “I popped in for lunch and the place exceeded my expectations. The food was lovely and the coffee was probably the best coffee I ever had.”

3. Jack and Linda Mills Traditional Fish Smokers

As the name suggests, Jack and Linda’s specialises in seafood. Low in fat and packed with protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which help manage heart disease, you could do a lot worse than fish for a healthy meal choice.

A visitor said: “Delightful restaurant with the best fish around. The staff are always very attentive and friendly, and the food is always cooked to perfection.”

4. Social Board, St James’s Street, Brighton

With superfood salads, soups and smoothies making up the menu, Social Board is a haven for healthy food.

A reviewer said: “I eat here regularly as the food is high quality and nutritional and the customer service is excellent. The szechuan tempeh sandwich is just the best and healthiest vegan fast food I’ve ever had in Brighton.”

5. LoveFit Cafe, Queens Road, Brighton

As the name suggests, LoveFit Cafe combine a passion for healthy food with a flair for tasty treats.

The UK’s original high protein restaurant uses lean meats in its burgers and breakfasts to make sure each dish is easy on the waistline.

A customer said: “I popped in on a whim to see what they meant by healthy fit cafe and was blown away. There’s a great choice of healthy food including decent veggie options, delicious smoothies and protein shakes. It’s very handy to leave the gym and have my smoothie made for me, and it’s tastier than mine too.”

6. Pavilion Gardens Cafe, Royal Pavilion Grounds, Brighton

If you can brave the cold, this family-owned open-air cafe could be for you. Baked potatoes, salads and sandwiches can be enjoyed alongside views of Brighton’s historic Pavilion.

A reviewer said: “A very pleasant cafe situated in the Pavilion gardens. The tea was good, my sandwich was hearty, the service friendly and the view of the Pavilion was breathtaking.”

7. The Garden Cafe, Nizells Avenue, Hove

Surrounded by tennis courts, a bowling green and a play area, The Garden Cafe is a great place to go to get active, while its seasonal salads and an ever-changing specials board keep the menu fresh.

A visitor said: “We were a large group of 35 or so and everything came out quickly and piping hot.

“The squid was my favourite, it was super fresh and cooked to perfection. I didn’t encounter a bad dish.”

8. Baked, Church Road, Hove

Any restaurant that can create a healthy pancake stack demands immediate attention. Baked make simple yet creative dishes using locally sourced ingredients where possible to make sustainable and ethical meals.

A reviewer said: “This place has lovely, friendly staff, a good choice on the menu and enough veggie and vegan options to keep me happy. I had the veggie breakfast which was really good and I loved the sausages.

“My partner had the meat one and he too praised his sausage and commented how nice his breakfast was, and it’s not often I hear him praise a meal.

9. Moksha Cafe, York Place, Brighton

This cafe serves British-inspired brunches and lunches, made with free-range meats and plenty of vegetables.

The huevos rancheros also contain a spicy kick to spike your metabolism.

One customer said: “I met up with my super healthy sister here and she ordered a green shake. Guilt ridden, I only chose the half breakfast, but it was more than enough.

“I savoured each mouthful under her disapproving gaze and green-moustached lips, and ended up leaving half of a precious sausage. But, balance was restored when I let her walk out in public with the green moustache.”

10. Happy Maki, Pool Valley, Brighton

Happy Maki’s unusual hybrid creation of vegan sushi burritos provide a light but filling food option.

A reviewer wrote: “I often eat wraps here and I always enjoy it. My stomach is really sensitive so if there is some ingredient that is not fresh I would have noticed it.

“So, I recommend it to everyone, you’ll definitely eat something good.”
