A FARM is looking for new homes for chickens who would otherwise be heading to the slaughter house.

The Macs Farm in Ditchling is looking for happy retirement homes for about 4,000 hens from Saturday.

Susie Mac from the farm said: “I’m not a good farmer as I struggle to send them to slaughter as I get so attached.

“We have been doing this for ten years and we have helped rehome 90,000 of our chickens.”

Susie said she began rehoming some of her chickens after speaking to animal rights activists.

Working with not-for-profit group, Fresh Start For Hens (FSFH), the farm is hoping to find forever homes for their organic free-range chickens.

Susie said: “Keeping chickens in the back garden is a great way for children to learn where their food comes from.

“Our hens are so friendly and make perfect pets that lay you a little present most days.”

If you would like to offer the “hardworking girls” a home and are available for pickup this Saturday or on January 12, email reservations@freshstartforhens.co.uk.

FSFH asks that everyone looking to rehome a chicken has a happy home, with a safe, secure and fox-proof run.
