A DRUNK spat at police officers after he was found lying in the middle of the road.

Robert Dutczak had been out with friends who had bought him drinks in Bognor.

But the unemployed 41-year-old was found in a stupor by police officers in Gravits Lane on December 22.

He appeared at Brighton Magistrates' Court on Christmas Eve.

Martina Sherlock, prosecuting, told the court about Dutczak's drunk and disorderly behaviour and the assault on PC Beaumont.

She read a statement from the Chief Constable, which explained how attacks on officers can lead to greater pressures on the force.

Andy Horsman, defending, said his client admitted the charges and apologised.

Dutczak, of Merchant Street in Bognor, has lived in the UK for seven years. He does not claim benefits or have a job.

Magistrates imposed fines, which were deemed paid because of his time in custody.
