THREE beer fans have brought the first micro-pub to their area.

And it’s proving to be just what the community wanted.

Musician Tommy Bowen opened The Foghorn Boundary Road, where Hove meets Portslade, with his brother-in-law Tim Harrow and former band member Niall Buckler.

Tommy said: “The response has just been amazing. People seem to love it since we opened a few weeks ago. We are all really in to beer and home brewing has always been a hobby for me.”

The new micro-pub used to be an adult learning centre, which moved to a larger property.

Tommy said: “It’s great we are still able to provide a community space for people to come to and hang out. A lot of people ask why we don’t have any music and don’t show sport on TV screens, but that’s not what this space is about. It’s somewhere to be sociable.”

The three said The Watchmakers Arms, the first micro-pub in Hove, was the main inspiration behind their new project.

Tommy, 34, is the live keyboard player for the post-punk band White Lies, whose debut album hit number one in the UK.

He is going on tour in the next few weeks but said he is looking forward to making the pub’s own home-brewed ales in about six months’ time to serve in the pub.

The Foghorn currently stocks Sussex beers including ales from Hand In Hand and Holler Brewery in Brighton and Franklins in Ringmer.

Tim, 40, who has lived in Portslade all his life, said: “What I have noticed since we started work on The Foghorn is how much support we have received from everyone. It has also been great supporting the community in the process.

“Most things we have bought for the pub are from the same street, so we have been giving back to local business.”

The name came from Tommy’s first home brewed ale which he named Foghorn after a song by punk band A.

He said: “It is pure coincidence that there is actually a foghorn in Portslade. A lot of people who come in ask if that’s what it is named after.”

Niall said: “It has been amazing. There has been a real mix of people which is what we wanted. We didn’t want it to just be somewhere for blokes to come and drink. We have had people come in from a bit further a field who have asked us to set up a micro-pub in their area. The feedback has been so positive.”

The Foghorn is open from noon to 2pm and 5pm to 9.30pm Monday to Thursday, noon to 11pm on Friday and Saturday and noon to 5pm on Sunday.
