THE Grand hotel bombing is being made into a TV drama by the makers of Peaky Blinders.

Five people were killed in the IRA’s attempted assassination of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher during the 1984 Conservative Party Conference in Brighton.

Mrs Thatcher survived the explosion and went on to give her keynote speech later in the day.

Caryn Mandabach Productions, the company that produces popular crime drama Peaky Blinders, is now adapting the events for the screen, using fictionalised characters in a dramatic “re-imagining” of the incident.

It will be written by author Jonathan Lee, based on his best-selling novel High Dive, which is based on the bombing and was hailed as “devastating and inspired” by The New York Times.

A spokeswoman for Caryn Mandabach Productions said: “The material offers a timely exploration of the allure of extremism and presents a tense, nuanced, and gripping portrait of an assassination attempt that changed the face of global politics for ever.”

Mr Lee will be joined by Eric Roth, who won an Oscar for writing the screenplay for Forrest Gump, in a supervising role

Mr Roth said: “High Dive is a literary tour de force. That rare combination of knuckle busting real life tension and the deep-felt humanity, the heartbreak of the lives that are affected.”

Producer Caryn Mandabach said she looked forward to the challenge of covering the subject.

She said: “Timeless in its depiction of how politics and politicians tend to crush the human spirit, Jonathan Lee’s brilliant book is more relevant now than ever.

“Of course, nothing more need be said about Eric.

“He is simply a master”

Writer Jonathan Lee also said he was looking forward to working on the production.

He said: “It’s a huge thrill to work with Caryn and Eric on adapting my novel for the screen.

“I’m looking forward to

reimagining the material for television.”

The series will be split into four episodes, but a broadcaster has not been chosen yet and it is not known when it will be screened.
