A SCHEME that provides jobs for disabled people looks set to be scrapped as it is running massively over budget.

Brighton and Hove City Council gives money to Able and Willing, a printing and embroidery business which helps people with disabilities build up their skills and confidence.

But the project has overspent by £378,000 over the past two years, according to a council report.

And it is expected to go another £155,000 over its £138,000 budget this year, the report says.

When it was set up, the council hoped it would be financially sustainable.

But the industry has declined in recent years.

Now the council wants to give disabled people work-experience-style placements within some of its own departments instead.

This will help them learn a wider range of skills, rather than just embroidery or printing, the report says.

Most similar employment schemes elsewhere have been scrapped.

The council says no disabled people will lose their jobs as a result of the changes.

The proposals will be discussed at a meeting of the children, young people and skills committee on Monday.
