A CAR reversed into the front of a cafe, shattering the window and narrowly missing people inside.

Firefighters had to cut the driver from the wreckage after the crash which happened at about 3.20pm.

The Chevrolet Spark went straight through the front of Jempson’s Cafe in Western Road, Bexhill.

One witness, who did not wish to be named, said: “I heard that it was an elderly lady that was pulling out and then had to reverse a bit but she put her foot on the accelerator.”

The crash happened in the one way system in Western Road which had to be closed between Sackville Road and Devonshire Road while the scene was made safe.

A spokesman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said two appliances and two technical rescue units attended.

He said: “Firefighters rescued one casualty, trapped inside the vehicle, who was left in the care of paramedics.

“Firefighters are still at the scene, assisting with the recovery of the vehicle and making the area safe.

“Both police and ambulance are in attendance, as well as a building inspector, who was requested to attend the scene.”

Jempson’s Cafe declined to comment.
