A FIRE tore through a residents garage this evening.

The building burst into flames at about 5.30pm tonight in Silverdale Drive, Sompting.

No one was reported to have been hurt but the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service had to use six breathing apparatus to deal with the fire.

A passerby who preferred not to be named said: “The owner rescued his family from inside the house which was attached to the flaming garage.

“He then went back in to rescue his dog.

“Certainly very brave of him.

“He said the fire service arrived really quickly and were very efficient.

“There were no ambulances and just one person was being attended to with first aid kit from the fire service.”

Another witness, Karen Hilton said: “The fire brigade were called about 5:30pm tonight because a garage in between two houses in Silverdale Drive was on fire.

“The smoke was billowing which can be smelt from streets away.

“Four appliances have been in attendance, fire fighters with breathing apparatus have been on the scene.

“Two appliances currently remain on site.”
