WHY is Sussex so special?

Well to start with, it’s a nice size being a little over 1,400 square miles.

We have about 1.7 million people living here and we have a long rich history, starting with our founders the Saxons in 477AD.

Historians often say that after the Battle of Lewes in 1264 our history was quiet compared to other counties.

They seem to forget the raids by the French when hundreds of our people were killed.

In the Civil War, Sussex was hotly contested by both sides as they wanted the cannons made here.

They also wanted the other requirement...gunpowder.

Sussex also supplied the oak for the Kings Navy and was at the forefront of the struggle against Napoleon; see the Martello Towers and Preston Barracks.

Again Sussex was very much involved in the two World Wars.

So as you can see Sussex has been very much involved with this country’s history.

Our countryside is soft and gentle.

It’s good to recuperate in after illness. Our small towns and villages are fantastic.

The people are light hearted and we welcome millions, yes millions, of visitors each year.

Even our animals, both wild and domestic, are looked after.

So there is nothing quite like Sussex by the Sea.
