ENVIRONMENTAL activists organised a flashmob event to highlight the dangers of climate change.

About 70 members of the Brighton branch of Extinction Rebellion, a non-violent international social movement fighting to prevent species extinction and climate change, stationed themselves at busy areas of the city, including Brighton Station and Churchill Square.

They sang and held placards with lyrics from the song “Emergency” by musician Blythe Pepino, which included: “This is an emergency. The waters are all climbing. And so we have to rise up now, or we will soon be drowning.”

Claudia Fisher, an Extinction Rebellion member from Brighton, said: “Climate change is an emergency. People should not be so focused on Brexit.

“Recent reports have shown we only have 11 years to keep the Earth’s temperature rising at the bearable rate of 1.5 degrees.

“If we keep doing what we are doing and let it increase by two or three degrees then Brighton wouldn’t exist anymore. We’d be under water.

“My daughter won’t have children. She said ‘I won’t bring a child in to this world if we keep destroying it’.”

Member Stefan Lindon from Shoreham said: “I have been a dedicated member of the Green Party for about 30 years now and not enough has been done. We really need to act on this. There needs to be more urgency.”

Nina Nowok-Raud, three, from Brighton said she does not want the penguins and polar bears to disappear.

Extinction Rebellion made a name for itself shortly after forming in October last year when about 6,000 members occupied five bridges in central London to voice their concern over the looming climate crisis.
