Car hits boy in Warren Way, Woodingdean - man arrested

The crash happened in Warren Way, Woodingdean this evening at about 6pm.

Sussex Police at the scene have said the boy suffered life-threatening injuries.

He has been taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital.

The South East Coast Ambulance services attended the incident.

The boy's aunt, Kerry Manser, posted online: “It’s my nephew so please if you saw them let us and police know.”

Mikail Arslan, manager of convenience store Wine Centre in Warren Way said: "The boy walked across the road and a red car hit him. 

"The boy was then dragged about 50 or 60 metres along with the car. 

"Part of him seemed stuck on top of the car as he was dragged.

"I imagine he is seriously hurt."

Mr Arslan said the road where the boy was hit was dangerous and badly lit.

He said: "I have CCTV where you can see the boy getting hit by the car and then pulled along by it. 

"I have been speaking to the police about it because my shop is right opposite where it happened."

A member of staff at the Co-op in Warren Way, who asked not to be named, said he saw the boy come in to the shop moments before he was hit. 

He said: "He was young. 

"Then just minutes after he left he got hit by the red car. 

"From what I have heard, the driver handed himself in and called the police himself."

A police spokeswoman said: "Emergency services were called to Sandhurst Avenue in Woodingdean, Brighton at 5.47pm this evening to a collision between a pedestrian and a car.

"The pedestrian, believed to be a teenager, has been taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital with serious injuries. 

"A man has been arrested. Police are still on scene. 

"Anyone with information is asked to contact police online quoting Operation Harvey."
