We have reported on one man’s plight at the hands of noisy students in his area.

David Mead says he has reached breaking point, where he feels like killing students in the street.

While many of us won’t feel the need to take quite such a drastic step, it is without doubt a feeling that will resonate with many of our readers.

A major frustration for residents in Hanover, Lewes Road, Bevendean and countless other neighbourhoods across our city is the large number of houses in multiple occupation for students.

They bring loud parties, drunken antics, and noise into the early hours of the morning.

These are familiar to many of us who were previously students both here and around the country.

It is not easy being packed off to unfamiliar places away from home, especially for young people.

An important part of being able to cope is having friends to share the experience.

So parties and some fun has to be expected. In a diverse city, it means we all need to work with each other to get along.

Many of our residents already understand this, and Brighton and Hove is not unique in having to deal with the issue.

The council is right that it needs to be looked at, but sadly for some areas it is years, if not decades, too late.

Students should try to get to know their neighbours and their communities. Many do, using pubs, shops and other services.

But they should also show more awareness of residents, and not push their luck too far.
