SIXTEEN homes were evacuated and a road was closed after a gas leak outside a block of flats.
Police, firefighters and gas engineers were called to reports of a ruptured main outside Downland Court in Crawley at 6.25pm on Sunday.
A 100 metre cordon was put up and the road was closed.
About 30 people had to leave their homes as a precaution.
Gas company SGN said repairs were carried out overnight and residents were due to be allowed home this morning.
Sussex Police said on Sunday night: “Most of the residents evacuated from the block have gone to stay with friends or family for the time being, and Crawley Borough Council have facilities for any of the others who may need assistance.
“There is currently no risk to the wider public.”
