BRIGHTON and Hove has some of the most valuable driveways in the UK.

A study found that homeowners could earn up to £4,190 a year by renting out their empty driveways.

This was second only to London, which had an earning potential of £5,860 per year.

The study was carried out by JustPark, an app which matches cars up with car parking spaces.

Prices are driven up in high demand areas such as those located near train stations, music venues and sports stadiums.

But, a JustPark spokesman said the private driveways were still cheaper for drivers to use than a car park space and would have several other benefits.

These include less driving around looking for a parking space, meaning less congestion in Brighton and Hove streets and improved air quality.

A recent study by Direct Line Car Insurance found that 3.5 million Brits are renting out their parking spaces, and driveways across the UK are earning more than £3.8 billion each year.

JustPark CEO, Anthony Eskinazi, said: "Driveways are an under-utilised resource for homeowners and our new data from the top space owners in Brighton and Hove reinforces our core proposition, that renting out driveways and parking spaces can be very lucrative.

"We have witnessed the peer-to-peer parking market grow 50 times over in the last 5 years. The numbers speak for themselves, we now have more than 2.4 million registered drivers across the country and are acquiring 150,000 new users per month, which is a testament to the demand.

"Driveway rental also provides a boost for the local area and economy. Utilising these empty spaces provides much-needed spots for visiting drivers to park in, while also putting money back into the pockets of local people. It's a win-win arrangement."
