TWO bosses at the city council’s waste collection department have been suspended, The Argus can reveal.

Cityclean’s head of operations Damian Marmura and another senior manager were suspended last week, sources have confirmed.

The reasons for the suspensions are not yet clear.

Trade union the GMB says an audit is under way at the depot in Hollingdean.

GMB regional organiser Gary Palmer said: “We can confirm that for some time now there has been an audit team up at the Cityclean depot.

“We have very little faith in the council team carrying out a professional, full, and unbiased audit of the workplace without a result which completely shatters the industrial relations we have with the council.”

The council has not confirmed that it has taken any action.

A council spokeswoman said: “To protect confidentiality and to ensure all due process is fair, we cannot currently provide any information on this, but as soon as is possible and appropriate, we will provide any details that we’re able to.”

Staff have been kept in the dark about why the decision was made, but the department is said to be functioning as normal.

Mr Marmura is said to have worked his way up from street sweeper to the role of head of operations.

He previously spoke to The Argus last year when we revealed why so many bin collections had been missed across the city.

He said at the time that a lack of drivers was the main reason for the problem, as well as access problems caused by bad parking.

New Cityclean boss Rachel Chasseaud has pledged to sort out the city’s bin collection problem within two years.

She was brought in in October to turn the struggling department around.
