AN ARSONIST boasted on his phone about starting a fire in a revenge attack.

James Stewart put lives in danger when he started the blaze at Victoria Court in Worthing in February last year.

It caused an estimated £11,000 worth of damage to the building as fire crews battled the flames.

But the public tipped-off the police after an arson probe was launched, and police found messages on his phone bragging about the fire.

Police said Stewart showed no care about the risks to people inside, and at Hove Crown Court he was jailed for ten years.

Judge Christine Henson said because of his dangerousness, he must serve a minimum of eight years before he can be considered for release. He will not automatically be released by the parole board.

The judge said it was a “revenge attack” which had affected many people in the community.

After the case PC Cheryl Kidd thanked the public for coming forward to tip-off police to help the investigation make quick progress.

She said: “Stewart set alight the flat with no thought to the injuries and damage he could have caused. We welcome the sentence Stewart has been given.

“We hope it sends a clear message that we will prioritise crimes that cause the greatest harm to victims and communities.”
