PLANS to redevelop a town centre ‘major eyesore’ are moving forward.

Burrscrofte care home in Pond Road, Shoreham has sat empty for 11 years as owners West Sussex County Council decided how to bring the site into use.

Now agreement has been struck to redevelop the land alongside the neighbouring library and health centre.

A new project board will be created and West Sussex County Council will work with Adur District Council and the NHS .

They will create a new and enhanced health centre, a new library and community hub and other public services, in conjunction with the Shoreham Community Centre.

The first step will be the demolition of the vacant care home in the coming months.

Councillor Neil Parkin, Leader of Adur District Council, said: “The people of Shoreham have been waiting for too long to see this high-profile site in the heart of the town brought back into use.

“I very much welcome this commitment from the county council to work up detailed plans for the wider Pond Road area in partnership with representatives from across the community.

“It is crucial that we act quickly to drive forward these proposals and I look forward to the day that contractors move in to demolish the major eyesore of Burrscrofte.”

Pond Road forms part of the One Public Estate West Sussex programme and is also a key part of the Adur and Worthing Growth Deal signed in 2017.

The meeting earlier included representatives from West Sussex County Council, Coastal West Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group, Adur District Council, Harbour View Healthcare GP surgery and St Mary de Haura church, as well as East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tim Loughton.

All are committed to making rapid progress with the project which they see as a major opportunity for health and wellbeing provision for the local community.

Work will now get underway to look at long term health provision.
