LIKE you I’m feeling weary from the grinding Brexit process; the arguments and the never-ending sense of impending doom.

That’s why I’m proposing an amendment to Theresa May’s Withdrawal Bill which aims to unite the Commons in passing a deal and then uniting the country around a final Brexit decision. Whether you’re a “remainer” or a “leaver” this amendment aims to satisfy everyone. Maybe only those wanting us to fall off a cliff-edge in a “no-deal” will be left unhappy, but if I can avoid a no deal and our economy crashing all the better. My plan is to form a cross-party consensus around getting May’s deal passed in the Commons, thus obeying the democratic will of the people, but then giving the public a “confirmation vote” on it. This would not begin a process of never-ending referendums. The “confirmation vote” would be what it says on the tin: the public would rubber stamp the deal, or not, in a final vote.

The amendment is designed to form agreement within Parliament and the country, something Theresa May has never tried to do. She hard-wired antagonism into the process from the start and pitted everyone against each other from day one. It’s time we moved away from this style of operating and look to a future where we can all move forward together. This way forward I’ve created allows a majority of MPs to vote for May’s final deal knowing it will be the public who have the ultimate say on it via the “confirmation vote”. This vote would not be a re-run of the 2016 referendum, but the real thing. We would know what Brexit looked like rather than a lie on the side of a bus.

Peter Kyle is the MP for Hove and Portslade.

When she became prime minster May said in her first speech that she would give people more power over their lives. If she doesn’t give people the power to have a say on this deal then those words were hollow.
