ARMY bomb experts were called in to blow up a suspected mortar shell.
Walkers at Devil’s Dyke reported seeing the shell at 8.40am today, and police were called.
The area was sealed off while the army disposal team were called in.
At lunchtime it was reported that the bomb squad carried out a controlled explosion on the shell, believed to be from the Second World War.
Footage from the scene showed two soldiers and a police officer detonating the device at a safe distance.
Brighton and Hove Police posted on Twitter: "Not a usual day in the office. WW2 mortar shell safely detonated by the @BritishArmy bomb disposal unit at Devil's Dyke. Thank you to the member of the public who called this in."
