Hollington was once a separate rural village until being absorbed into St Leonards-on-Sea; it has many footpaths, most of which are now urban paths. John Harmer has linked some of these to make this circular walk with an option for a pleasant hospital visit.

1) From opposite the church gate, go by a vehicle barrier and along the path which runs parallel with the road. Continue uphill through woodland where there is a short path on the left to the road and bus stops.

Follow the path uphill, bearing right up steps and along a twitten with houses on the right. On approaching a road, turn left along the higher footpath; then descend to cross the road and turn left.

2) At the junction of Wishing Tree Road with Marline Road, go over the zebra crossing and follow the tarmac path to the right of a children’s playground. On approaching houses, turn left on the path downhill and, soon after rounding a right-hand bend, turn left to go through cycle barriers. In a few paces, follow the right-hand path uphill to the end; then go up shallow steps on the left to a road and turn left uphill.

At the junction with Tile Barn Road, turn right and, almost immediately, turn right along Lancaster Road. Follow the footway which swaps from one side to the other; then going downhill to a road junction, cross and turn left on the footway uphill. As the road levels, turn sharp right opposite a fingerpost, going downhill. Immediately past a vehicle barrier, turn right continuing downhill to Battle Road.

3) Cross at the traffic island in front of Co-op and go to the left along Upper Glen Road. At a fingerpost, go along a footpath on the left. Turn right downhill between board fences and over a footbridge. Follow the path uphill to the right of houses; then up steps to the main road (A21).

Cross with care at traffic island and continue on path opposite. Cross an estate road and along a twitten opposite; then at the next estate road, go a little to the left and cross to continue direction on path uphill.

At Harrow Lane, cross at traffic island by mini-roundabout and go along Little Ridge Avenue. Follow the footway for about half a mile.

4) If taking an optional visit to the garden area and pond in the grounds of Conquest Hospital, turn left into Oasthouse Close. Immediately before the hospital buildings, turn left and follow the path around, keeping close to the buildings on the right; then return to Little Ridge Avenue.

To continue our route; just beyond Oasthouse Close, turn right on a sign-posted bridleway, following this for about 750 yards. At a three-way fingerpost, turn left on the footpath and continue direction for about 500 yards along Silverhill Avenue.

At the main road (A21), turn right along the footway and cross at the light-controlled pedestrian crossing. Turn right and, in a short distance, turn left into Shirley Drive.

Where the roadway bears left at the bottom, go straight ahead down a slope to follow the left-hand path between a wall and board fence. On coming into the end of a cul-de-sac, continue direction to the main road and turn right to cross at the light-controlled pedestrian crossing.

5) Turn right and, immediately past shops, turn left down shallow steps. At the bottom, turn left and then right; coming to a road, cross and turn left. Turn right into Blackman Avenue going uphill and where the footway goes away from the road, turn right by a green wire fence.

Follow the path through cycle barriers, past the school entrance and continue direction; then turning left, cross a road. Continue direction to the next road; turn left to go down the slope and use the zebra crossing to enter Wishing Tree Road. Retrace the route to Church in the Wood.
