A DISABLED couple have been trapped in their own home for nearly two months as the entrance of their flat has been left in disrepair.

Mandy Page, 51, who is wheelchair bound, said she has had enough after repeatedly requesting the housing association to fix the door.

This has left her and her partner, Simon Huth, 43, unable to leave their house for shopping or even going out.

Ms Page, who lives in Matthew House, in Miles Walk, Hove, said: “The entrance door on the ground floor has been left unrepaired for seven weeks.

“Simon walks with crutches. While I can use the wheelchair to push the door to open, it’s impossible to get back in. I only have one good hand but I am not strong enough to pull the heavy glass door. This means if I go out, I am stuck outside.

“Normally, I can use a key fob or type in a code to open the door, but that doesn’t work. So now the door is unlocked and it’s very unsafe. A couple of weeks ago, several drunks came in and they were kicking the lift door and our front door.

“It was really scary. I live on the ground floor and I am terrified that there may be more drunks coming in.”

The couple have lived in the flat for ten years and they said they were disappointed with Clarion Housing’s response to the problem, but it has now promised to sort it out by Monday.

Ms Page said the only chance they have to get out of the house is during her dialysis appointments at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

She added: “This is affecting our day-to-day lives. We have been relying on delivery for our groceries.

“There are many things to do in Brighton, we really want to go to the pier and restaurants, but we can’t do that. We can’t even go out to Tesco, which is next to us. The only way we can get out of the flat is when I have hospital appointments every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

“We rely on hospital transport staff to open the door for us when we leave and return to our flat.

“I have been contacting Clarion Housing for seven weeks. They told me the door will be fixed on Monday. But we shouldn’t need to wait this long because it’s an emergency.”

A Clarion Housing spokeswoman said: “Following Clarion being made aware of an issue with the door closing mechanism to the communal front door at Matthew House, a replacement part was ordered and is due to be available for installation on Monday.

“Staff from the local team have been in contact to update the residents affected and will conduct a follow-up visit to check the replacement part having fully resolved the issue for these residents.

“Clarion recognises the inconvenience this has caused to the affected residents.”
