DRIVERS are being told to expect slower journey times and delays to bus and train services after a yellow weather warning was issued across the south east.

The Met Office has put the fog warning in place, saying it is expected to last until 10am.

It also warned that it could cause delays and cancellations to flights.

On its website, it said: “Areas of dense fog are expected this morning, especially over higher routes.

“The fog is expected to continue through the morning travel period before clearing later this morning.”

The Met Office issues warnings of dense fog when visibility is expected to fall below 200 metres, and said that “travelling in fog can be extremely dangerous”.

It advised road users to avoid travel wherever possible, drive slowly with dipped headlights, use fog lights, limit their speed as “fog can give the illusion of moving in slow motion” and watch out for freezing fog.

On its website, the Met Office said: “Fog can particularly affect road and air travel due to reduced visibility.

“According to the Highway Code headlights should be used when visibility is below 100 metres.

“Before setting off on a foggy journey, drivers should make sure their lights - especially fog lights - are working properly.”
