HOMELESS people will have a float in the annual Pride parade for the first time this year.

The float will be a chance to show off some of their artwork.

Those supporting the rough sleepers are thrilled by the news.

Jim Deans, who runs Sussex Homeless Support in Brighton, said: “It’s about time there is something organised where the homeless in our city have the opportunity to showcase their exceptional talent.

“We have plumbers, electricians, carpenters, people who have all sorts of skills within the homeless community.

“Last year we walked behind the parade and the homeless lot built a bike to tow a mini bus that they made and it was just incredible how functional and sturdy it was.”

The charity is pleased to be given the opportunity to raise awareness about rough sleepers in Brighton.

Mr Deans said: “There is a big gay population in the homeless community and in emergency accommodation, more than you might think.

“It will be a chance for us to encourage more support.”

The homeless group has been offered a car transport trailer to work with to create the bespoke float for the parade.

Mr Deans said there have been a few ideas but the current plan is to covert the trailer into a bus.

He said: “The homeless bus shelter burnt down a few weeks ago and the guys have really done remarkable work on it.

“It’s not only three days away from being re-done but they have renovated it and added more to it.

“People just don’t realise how talented our homeless people are. The talent is just unreal.”

Sussex Homeless Support has also been given a stand at the Kemp Town Carnival on June 1 to spread the word.

Mr Deans said: “It’s so important to us that we have been included in this because it gives the homeless people something positive to work on.

“It gives them something to focus on and help distract from the harsh reality of the streets.

“Everyone is really excited and looking forward to the festival.”

Brighton Pride will take place on Saturday, August 3, in Preston Park.
