ALBION fans who have questions about their prostate health are encouraged to attend a drop-in event before today’s home Premier League game with Huddersfield Town.

The Seagulls’ official charity, Albion In The Community, will be in the Brighton Diagnostic and Treatment Centre in the East Stand at the American Express Community Stadium between noon and 2pm as part of its Speak Up Against Cancer campaign.

AITC will be joined by prostate health experts from the local NHS and the event is also being supported by the Medical Imaging Partnership at the Brighton Diagnostic and Treatment Centre.

Visitors can discuss any concerns they have with AITC’s team, and there will be a consultation room for anyone who wants a confidential one-to-one with an NHS expert.

Fans who attend the drop-in can also enter a free prize draw to win a football signed by the Albion team.

Prostate cancer is the most-common cancer among men in the UK, with around 40,000 news cases in the UK every year - roughly 130 each day. That figure includes almost 150 new diagnoses in Brighton and Hove every 12 months.

However, if caught early, 90% of prostate cancers can be treated successfully.

Symptoms include experiencing difficulty or pain when going to the toilet, going more often, particularly at night, or noticing blood in the urine. Unexplained weight loss and impotence or erective dysfunction could also be early warning signs.

Sue Brown, who works on AITC’s Speak Up Against Cancer campaign, said: “It is important to remember that while none of these symptoms necessarily point towards cancer, it is best to get them checked out as the earlier a cancer is caught, the better the chances of successfully treating it.

“Prostate cancer is most-common in the over-50s, among people with a family history of prostate cancer, smokers, or people of Afro-Caribbean descent, but we are keen to speak to anyone experiencing symptoms, or who has questions about prostate health.

“If you have any concerns, come and see us before the Huddersfield Town game. It will only take you a few minutes, but it could save your life.”

Speak Up Against Cancer is commissioned by NHS Brighton and Hove Clinical Commissioning Group and Brighton & Hove City Council Public Health. In the last 12 months alone the campaign has seen AITC’s team meet face-to-face with more than 18,000 people in Brighton and Hove.
