A CAMPAIGN has been organised to try and get a security guard at Sainbury’s her job back.

Jemma Elizabeth Garrett from Hove has been protecting staff and thwarting shoplifters at the supermarket in South Coast, Peacehaven for two months.

But last week, the 37-year-old was told that her services were no longer needed.

Ms Garrett said: “I protect the staff and keep the customers happy.

“I keep an eye on the shop and keep track of everybody who comes in.

“Everyone’s a suspect, even the old grannies with their Bags for Life.”

Ms Garrett said the security job at the Sainbury’s Local was the best she has ever had.

He duties included standing guard at the door, keeping an eye on potential shoplifters and moving on “troublemaking kids”.

She said: “There’s a load of shoplifting and antisocial behaviour.

“Me being there gives the staff peace of mind.”

She was told last week that she would be moved on from her job following a report by senior management.

Heartbroken Ms Garret, who commuted to the job across the city, said the company were “making a mistake” by moving her on.

She said: “It’s not about the money, I just really, really, enjoy working there.

“I like watching people and their behaviour and everyone gets a hello whether they like it or not.

“The staff are sweet and the customers are awesome.”

Ms Garrett, who used to run Club New York in Dyke Road, said she feels like she has been left in limbo after the decision.

Upon hearing the news, shoppers started an online campaign to get her the job back.

A petition to “get Jemma Elizabeth Garrett her security job back” has been signed by 36 people.

Ms Garrett said: “This is the first time in my life that someone’s done this for me.

“I was feeling quite down so it’s lifted me up.

“My confidence in humanity has been restored, these people are total sweethearts.”

The petition, started by Jordan Tettersel says: “Jemma Elizabeth Garrett has been told she is no long needed for security in Sainsbury’s but we all think she is.

“She brings not only security but also one of the best customer services I’ve seen in a store.

Let’s all help her to get her job back.”
