THE family of a “high risk” young woman last seen a year ago have called for a major redevelopment to be halted as they believe her remains could be buried at the site.

Georgina Gharsallah, 31, was last seen in her home town of Worthing on the morning of March 7 last year. She was reported missing by her family ten days later.

On April 20, a witness reported seeing two men who were allegedly spotted speaking to Georgina in Tarring Road, at the junction with Clifton Road, between 7pm and 8pm.

Sussex Police have investigated almost 60 potential sightings. However, none of them proved to be Georgina.

The family have started a campaign to stop further re-development plans at Teville Gate in Teville Road, which is near where Ms Gharsallah was last seen.

Her mother Andrea Gharsallah said: “Sussex Police have had no leads in this case and my daughter appears to have vanished completely without trace. Many members of the public and my family feel a thorough specialist search for any human remains at the entire Teville Gate site is undoubtedly necessary in order to establish whether my daughter’s remains are situated there.”

Plans were approved on March 8 last year to knock down Teville Gate car park. The demolition was completed 20 weeks later.

Worthing Borough Council plans to turn the land into a temporary car park to generate short-term income while the private owner, Mosaic, has proposed to build flats, a gym and restaurants on a plot it calls Station Square.

Previously, Mrs Gharsallah told The Argus: “We’ve made fresh appeals in the media, hoping that Georgina can see it. We have been provided with eight hypotheses explaining Georgina’s disappearance.

“These include suicide, trafficking, held against her will or murder. There are no changes to her bank account and she doesn’t have access to a phone.”

Detective Inspector Simon Dunn said: “Georgina is still being treated as a high risk missing person and enquiries into her disappearance are continuing. Despite huge amount of enquiries in an effort to locate her and track her movements, we are no further to understanding the true circumstances of her disappearance.

“We have conducted TV and radio press appeals which have reached out across all corners of the UK and have continued to post social media messages appealing for the public to keep looking for her.

“Plans are in place for further national appeals in the very near future. We understand this has been an extremely difficult time for the family and they, alongside us, are desperate to hear from her.”

The family will hold a vigil tomorrow night at Worthing Station from 7pm until 8pm.

Worthing Borough Council declined to comment.
