OK SO some of them probably did just like the idea of bunking off school. And many will remember it for the rest of their lives. Imagine being 14, 15 or 16 and hanging around Brighton city centre with your friends. All of us who are not that age and were not doing that are jealous.

But if you think that was all yesterday’s climate protest was all about then read the quotes on pages two and three of today’s Argus again.

These young people are scared and the science is there to show why.

They have already warned that we are nearing the cliff edge.

Last year, after three years of research and a week of haggling between scientists and government officials at a meeting in South Korea, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change issued a special report on the impact of global warming of 1.5C. Its dramatic report on keeping that rise under 1.5 degrees C said the world is now completely off track, heading instead towards 3C.

Keeping to the preferred target of 1.5C above pre-industrial levels will mean “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society”.

It will be hugely expensive – but the window of opportunity remains open, they said.

So these young people took to the streets for good reason. They want to live out their lives not fearing the planet will become uninhabitable. They will want to have children one day. It is no good burying our heads in the sand. If we can make small changes, like walking to the shop and not taking other small trips by car then we should.

Just in case it helps.
