MORE than one hundred people gathered for a vigil to remember victims of two mosque shootings in New Zealand last Friday.

People stood outside Hove Town Hall this afternoon to mourn those who died. The vigil, organised by Brighton and Hove City Council, aims to send a message of love and peace.

Leader of the council, Councillor Daniel Yates, said: “Everyone here is sending a message of hope.

"Not only to the city, but across the world.

"We want to assure everyone in our community that we can achieve safety and peace.

“Those who hate are trying to rip us apart. In the end, if we work together, we can show that there is no place for hatred.

"We want to reiterate that our city is a sanctuary for diverse cultures. I want people to feel they are confident to report any hate crime. People from all cultures and religion are supported."

Chief executive of the city council, Geoff Raw, said: "It's wonderful to see you here today.

"We are standing up for those who are undergoing terrible circumstances."
