THIS photograph shows a group enjoying a summer's day long ago ... but can you help its current owner identify any of those on it?

It was brought to our attention by Globe reader Tom Alderson. His wife's late grandfather lived in Hoylake for many years and was an amateur painter.

Tom said: "Apparently her grandfather had bought up some old pictures in a junk shop to use the frames for his paintings.

"When one of his pictures came apart in the frame I found this old photo inside."

The picture's backing is marked Priestley & Sons, Egremont & Claughton and it's apparently a tennis club.

Tom continued: "Mike Priestley, a descendant, advised me that The Archive service on the Wirral hold the Priestley collection but I know there are no other such images there.

"This would have been a commission, I imagine, and most of these were sold without records being kept apart from the shipping photos that the company specialised in, in addition to family groups and portraits.

"The photographic business was Wallasey-based and the Claughton branch only operated between 1897 and 1905, which should help in dating the picture.

"The picture is well preserved and seems, to my untutored eye, to be of very good quality.

"Perhaps some of your readers might recognise themselves or their forbears in these faces?"

If you can help Tom identify any of the people, contact craig.manning@nqnw,co.uk and we will pass your details onto him.
